The novel «Do the Oxen Low When the Mangers Are Full?» is the work of two authors — Panas Myrny (original idea, ideological and thematic concept) and his brother Ivan Bilyk (deepening the work’s issues, refining the composition and style). The work became the first monumental peasant epic in Ukrainian literature, a comprehensive portrayal of life in a Ukrainian village. The authors boldly affirm an idea important in all ages — the people would live peacefully if not for unbearable oppression, and only through violence can the world be changed. Modern literary scholars define the theme of the novel as the life story of the criminal Chipka, depicted against a broad social background, from his birth to his imprisonment in a penal colony. Interestingly, Soviet textbooks and manuals formulated the theme of this work somewhat differently: “A depiction of the life and struggle of Ukrainian peasants against social oppression, particularly serfdom, on the eve of and during the reforms that began in 1861.”
